After a week off the Eagles went to Broomfiled on their travels hoping to get another win against their nearest rivals.
Much to the delight of the strange bloke watching us from his garden we were forced to get changed pitchside since the dressing rooms were locked.
Once the game kicked off we realised we would be in for a hard afternoon, particularly those in midfield who had an extra man to contend with plus John Coffey off the Green Mile who was heard to whisper "It's ok Mr Bojangles" in Si Atter's ear.
Broomfield made a bright start and we had to defend in numbers to block the early attacks. Sure enough though with plenty of attacking options ourselves once we got some possession of the ball we were able to create chances and Ben struck the post and then Cam had a shot cleared off the line.
We went in 0-0 at half-time which was a fair reflection of what had happened.
We were determined to start the second half better and we put the oppo under some early pressure. Oli came on and within minutes of his introduction he had won us a penalty after he was rather needlessly shoved in the box. The big man with feelings handed the ball to cool hand (or should that be foot?) Jose who struck the pen low and hard into the bottom corner to give us the lead.
What followed was not pretty or clever, much like a lot of the third team so it's a surprise we've got away with it for so long this season.
Having used all 3 subs Broomfield were forced to go down to 10 men after Oli challenged the aforementioned John Coffey lookalike and he had to go off to cough up some flies (no more Green Mile references I promise, although it really is a great film).
Rather than using our brains though and exercising some control over things by playing keep-ball we allowed the game to carry on end-to-end and this was to be our undoing as we missed a few scoreable chances and over-committed men forward. When Broomfield broke on the counter we were over-stretched at the back on several occasions and eventually they stuck a goal in. No less than they deserved but certainly an avoidable goal.
There was an air of massive disappointment at the end of the game that we had not kept our winning streak going but we have a lot to be proud of ourselves for so far this season and this will count as a good lesson for us.
Man of the Match goes to Tony for his sheer commitment - running from train to train to find his kit bag at Waterloo after leaving it on the train at Vauxhall and then buying a massive jug for the team in the bar afterwards. He played alright too.
